Advertising on ChatGPT: OpenAI’s new strategic phase begins in the U.S.

The AI world is undergoing a major shift with the official introduction of advertising within ChatGPT. This evolution, which had been anticipated since January, signals OpenAI’s desire to diversify its revenue streams while maintaining free access for the widest possible audience. For now, this rollout is exclusive to the United States and targets a specific audience.

Target user profiles for advertisements

The appearance of ads does not affect all users of the platform. This change primarily impacts those using the free version of the chatbot, as well as subscribers to the intermediate “Go” plan, offered at ten dollars per month.

However, OpenAI has established a strict age barrier: minors under the age of eighteen are automatically shielded from advertising exposure, regardless of their account type.

Integration based on conversational context

Technically, the user experience has been designed to be non-intrusive. Promotional messages appear as a dedicated insert, placed discreetly following the response provided by the AI.

Relevance is at the heart of the system; the algorithm seeks to link the ad to the theme of the discussion. For example, a search for cooking tips or specific recipes could trigger the display of offers for fresh grocery delivery services or meal kits.

Protection of sensitive data and user control

Despite this commercial expansion, the startup is imposing rigorous ethical limits to guarantee the security of exchanges. It is stipulated that no advertising can be associated with sensitive or regulated topics, such as health issues, mental well-being, or political debates.

Furthermore, advertising remains completely absent in specific contexts such as temporary chats, offline sessions, or image creation phases. Finally, OpenAI gives control to the users, who retain the ability to delete or report any ad they deem dangerous or inappropriate.
