Since military strikes began on February 28, the escalation between the United States, Israel, and Iran has sparked a parallel, and equally devastating, phenomenon: an explosion of forged visual content. Behind the ultra-realistic war images saturating social media lies a misinformation industry fueled by the pursuit of profit.
A chaos factory at your fingertips
The urgency of breaking news is driving millions of users to social media for real-time updates. This demand for immediacy has become the perfect playground for creators of fake content. Thanks to rapid advancements in generative AI, producing a convincing video of a bombardment or a satellite image of destroyed bases now takes only a matter of minutes.
Once the exclusive domain of professionals with significant technical resources, the creation of war visuals is now accessible to anyone. These tools generate scenes with disturbing realism, capable of deceiving even seasoned observers and racking up hundreds of millions of views in record time.
Profit over truth
The motivation behind this manipulation is not always political or ideological. For many account holders, the primary objective is financial. By exploiting the raw emotion and fear generated by the conflict, these creators capture massive audiences that automatically trigger social media monetization programs.
Every share of a doctored video generates advertising revenue, effectively turning misinformation into a lucrative business model.

A fractured technological front
Faced with this growing threat, social media giants are reacting with little consistency. X has recently taken a firm stance by deciding to cut off revenue for accounts posting AI-generated war videos that are not explicitly labeled. This measure aims to hit manipulators where it hurts, their wallets, to slow the spread of “infox.”
However, this initiative remains an outlier. To date, Meta and TikTok have not announced similar restrictive measures. This lack of coordination among tech giants leaves the door wide open for viral deception, further obscuring the reality of an already deeply complex conflict.
